About This Episode
In Episode 6, Scott McLean, Brendan Ungemach and John Shoemaker share an inside look at the animal health market, where the data and workflows differ from human health and scrutiny on each transaction keeps growing.
The conversation starts with the practitioner and facility data behind animal health compliance. The panel walks through veterinarian and veterinary technician licenses, controlled substance credentials and why the NPI, a common identifier in human health, rarely applies to veterinarians. They then explain premise licensing, which varies from state to state, with examples such as the Florida healthcare clinic establishment permit, the Ohio terminal distributor of dangerous drugs license and the state rules for mobile clinics.
“It’s a stronger position to be able to show that, as a pharmacy, you’re independently validating the practitioners, especially when this product may be controlled or commonly diverted.”
Brendan Ungemach, Product Specialist
The panel shares what customers raise most often. Commercial and sales operations teams want to size their market in a field where veterinarians change practice locations often. Compliance and trade teams face growing pressure to confirm a practitioner is active and eligible before an order ships, which is driving more frequent license monitoring and faster delivery of license data into order management systems.
The panel compares the direct-to-vet model, where manufacturers can validate customers at registration and checkout, with the wholesale model, where manufacturers may have limited visibility into the end customer and depend on their distributors to validate each ship-to location.
They close on pharmacy fulfillment. Regulators increasingly ask pharmacies how they validated a prescriber, and the panel explains why independent prescriber license validation gives a pharmacy a stronger answer than the information submitted with a prescription.
